While not the quietest engine ever encountered, it lends the car a sporty edge. The engine initially seems every bit of four-cylinders, but the crankshaft-driven supercharger kicks in with a hearty whine and lots of power. It also makes this car a real alternative for someone looking for a car in the low 30s price range, something that couldn’t be said of its predescessor. That’s only 0.1 second slower than the more expensive six-cylinder model. Zero to 60 now takes a mere 8.1 seconds, two seconds quicker than last year and closer to other cars in this class. You’d expect double-overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, but it’s the Eaton supercharger with an intercooler that adds the oomph. The numbers: 185 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque from a 2.3-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. That translates into a 37 horsepower increase and 38 pound-feet of torque increase. Thankfully, this year the standard engine comes from Mercedes Benz’s SLK coupe. When it debuted last year, the underpowered C230 came with a mere 148 horsepower, less than a Nissan Altima. Thanks for the help. After having redone its entry-level line for 1998, you’d think the folks at Mercedes Benz would leave well enough alone for their most affordable sedan, the C230.īut with increasing competition in the near-luxury class - those cars with base prices from $30,000 to $40,000 - the folks at M-B addressed one of the C230s biggest deficits: power. haha I'm kickin myself for not holding out for the C320 or even the C280. I think that will make me feel a little better about my low end mercedes. So far i'm thinking the order of mods is going to be, the Booster, an ECU tune, then maybe smaller brakes. How much could be gained with smaller brakes? One thing I wonder, is how do the 15" rims handle? Just like stock rims? better/worse?ĭo you think I'd notice lower braking speeds with the smaller C240 brake replacement? Also, it just sounds like a big job. It makes the car seem so much slower off the line then my previous SER SPEC-V which it probably is, due to the pedal delay. I've only been driving the car for a little over a week and I've noticed the ~1 sec acceleration delay when you hit the pedal every time. I checked out the Sprint Booster and that was exactly what i was wanting to achieve. I'm not sure if the weight difference will be counter effective to the other upgrades. I'd like to get some black 18's if they make 'em. The other thing i haven't been able to find are black rims. I'll prob get some perforance air filters also to aid in breathing. Has anyone done the ASP pulley upgrade to an '06 C230 sport? Also where did they find the product and what were the details on it? Then i read in a couple places that a new ASP pulley would give another 5 - 10 hp, but i haven't been able to find the ASP pulley for the 2.5L engine model. I was thinking of doing a new exhaust system but it seems the '06 C230 sport has a pretty decent stock exhaust and dumping a grand into a new one for a 1 or 2 hp just isn't worth it to me. Short of buying a $10k supercharger, i think tuning is the best option.īefore i get the ecu re-tuned though i wanted to see what else i could squeeze a couple hp and ft-lbs out of. I've been looking around to see what people have to say are the most effective mods for the car.
